Abstract Grunge Texture

What is real?

Authentic™ is a conceptual museum exhibit supported by a visual essay that explores authenticity as an experience rather than a static definition. Inspired by design theory research, the project considers how physical artifacts, visual systems, and narrative environments can communicate trust and meaning in an age shaped by AI.

The work invites audiences to move through authenticity as a process—questioning where value comes from, how it is verified, and who gets to define what is “real.”

AUTHENTIC

A Visual Essay and Conceptual Exhibit on Authenticity in the Digital Age

In today’s digital culture, authenticity is often curated rather than lived. Brands promote “real” and “unfiltered” imagery that is heavily edited, while creators carefully stage moments meant to feel relatable. As a result, the meaning of authenticity has become increasingly unclear.

This conceptual exhibit explores how authenticity has shifted over time—from the maker’s mark, when authenticity was tied to process and origin, through industrialization, and into the digital age. While authenticity is repeatedly reconstructed, each version moves further from its original definition.

In the exhibit, viewers encounter curated “real” moments displayed on large, pixelated screens. By scanning a QR code, they can test whether the content is authentic, mirroring the verification systems used by digital platforms as trust and privacy become growing concerns.

The experience highlights how uncommon true authenticity has become and encourages viewers to question what they see, what they trust, and why.
